Strays In The Streets
Have you ever seen a lone dog or cat just wandering in the streets? If you have, have you ever stopped to think about them?
We are all about changing this sad truth about strays in Shanghai. Nobody wants them and they are all alone, which shouldn't be. People claim that "dogs are man's best friends" and every child loves to pet a cat. So why should we be abandoning so many? Why should we be leaving them behind to fend for themselves?
If you have ever gone to a pet shop or animal shelter, you will see many pets in a comfortable, safe place waiting to be adopted. This is fine. But if there are shops and shelters, why are there still so many strays? This is a question many of you might ask.
The answer is yet unknown. Maybe the people aren't really into this job. Maybe they just don't care and are only working there for the money. Maybe they don't realize they haven't done their duty.
The problem is still of the strays. They were probably once domesticated- tamed by humans for our own personal uses, in this case to be a companion. That means all alone in an unknown place, they are uncomfortable and unsafe. They don't know how to hunt- they were always fed in a bowl with the family they once belonged to. They don't know where to sleep- without their comfortable basket with warm blankets and toys to play with, they have no idea where to find shelter. And most of all, they don't have company.
With humans, pets are always cuddled with and the center of attention. But out in the open, they don't have that anymore. They might miss their old owners, which could cause them to get sick and die. And if they try to go back to that owner who doesn't want the pet anymore, it could cause in injury- and the destruction of their self-esteem.
Pets should not be strays. They should be where they belong- in a house with humans to take care of them. If humans have taken them from the wild and domesticated them, they should not return them. It isn't being responsible and is bringing a life into danger. Animals might not be as smart as humans, but they are definitely still forms of life. They have emotions, too.
There is a saying that you might have heard of before: "You can turn a donkey into a horse, but you cannot turn a horse into a donkey." The same applies to pets and strays. Once a stray is a pet, you can't turn it back.
So, pet owners, keep your pets and don't let them go.
Or you'll be adding to the problem we are trying to solve, and when that happens, you'll have to solve it, instead of us.
Beware.
We're watching you.
